Arrival in Iceland
After a six-hour flight, from 8:30pm east coast time to 7:30am Iceland time, we arrived at the airport. As usual, I got very little sleep on the plane. We went through customs easily and were met at the airport by our driver, who introduced himself as Aje (spelling guessed at). The ride to Reykjavik was about 45 minutes. It was pre-dawn, and the sky looked like a gray cloud blanket reaching almost but not quite to the horizon on all sides. Naturally, our rooms at the hotel would not be ready for some hours yet, so we had breakfast there and went off for a walk--Paula, Isaac, and myself. My pre-exploration using Google street view served me well. I felt at all times like I had a pretty good idea of where I was. We found the Bonus grocery store, then went for a long walk along Laugavegur, the main tourist shopping street. We went along that as far as Rainbow Street, then came back along that. We sat in the hotel dining area until our rooms were ready, then (except for Isaac) went up...
